PostSubject: Ex Laker BAC One-Elevens in BCAL service   Mon Apr 05, 2010 3:28 am

BCAL leased four former Laker Airways BAC One-Eleven 320L-AZs from Nordic Finance Ltd for a short period in 1982/3. Three of these were painted in full BCAL colours but the fourth would appear to have been prepared for sub lease to Air Manchester in their colours but in fact was never delivered to them. However, I believe this fourth aircraft G-BKAU was operated by BCAL in Air Manchester colours but did it carry British Caledonian titles? It was reported operational at CDG in late July 1982. All four of these aircraft, G-BKAU, G-BKAV, G-BKAW and G-BKAX were sold in Nigeria to Okada Air Ltd in October and November 1983 as 5N-AOZ, 5N-AOP, 5N-AOK and 5N-AOT.
Is there anybody on the BCal Forum who could confirm when each of these aircraft entered service with BCAL (G-BKAV I believe entered service as BR894 from LGW to CDG on 15Aug82) and when each was withdrawn from service? I understand that all four aircraft were delivered from Gatwick with British registrations and were re-registered in Nigeria on arrival there. The last three were reported as delivered on 26Sep83, 12Nov83 and 26Sep83 respectively but I have no record of the departure date from LGW for G-BKAU. Can anybody confirm what colour schemes all four aircraft were delivered in when they departed for Nigeria?
I am Air-Britain (Historians) Ltd specialist on BAC One-Elevens and would greatly appreciate any help in solving the above missing details in my individual histories records for these aircraft.

Regards, Richard J. Church.

hi Richard

I have some details for AW and AX

G-BKAW, entered BCal service on 5th May 1982 and flew the Gatwick-Brussels service under Captain Scott and F/O Birkbeck

G-BKAX, went into service with BCal on 30th May 1982, flying the Gatwick – Genoa route, Captain Greggs and F/O Naughton.

Nothing on service details for BKAU yet im afraid, though I have a photo of AU in basic Air Manchester livery, without BCal titles.

Hello Dave,

Many thanks for those details. They are very much appreciated and I will update my records accordingly. That BKAU is still a bit of a mystery but hopefully somebody will come up with the information. It will still be good to know when each of these aircraft last flew for BCAL as well.

Regards, Richard.

PostSubject: Air Manchester BAC 1-11   Fri Apr 23, 2010 1:12 am

Hi Richard..............

Just to let you know that my records had me flying as a passenger on BCal flight;

BR984/15JAN84 MANLGW and the aircraft was a BAC 1-11 in Air Manchester paint scheme.

Unfortunately,I can't confirm any registration for the specific aircraft but it was definately a 'short' BAC 1-11....ie think this means it was a 200/300 or 400 series as opposed to the 500 longer fuselage series type!

Anyway...happy hunting,

from,

Hello John,

Interesting post that. G-BKAU had its registration cancelled a sold in Nigeria on 16Nov83 while the only other One-Eleven to appear in Air Manchester colours, G-SURE, was rolled in Dan-Air colours on 11May83 and was in storage at Lasham at the time of your flight and as far as I am aware never flew with BCAL. Are you sure that you have the right date?

Best regards, Richard.

PostSubject: Have double checked and the flight was definately on...   Sat Apr 24, 2010 5:46 am

BR984 Y SU 15JAN84 MANLGW SA B11
I have commented it that 'flight operated with Air Manchester B11 equipment'.

Sorry Ii can't be more specific.Unfortunately,I didn't start taking actual aircraft reg's until a couple of years later!

Remember thinking at the time though Richard that Air Manchester had already folded.Seem to remember that unfortunately, they didn't last very long.
Perhaps this was some other rogue BAC 1-11?

hi Richard

Re the departure dates, I have found a bit of info

G-BKAX 27th - 29th September 1983 LGW - Benin City via Casablanca - Banjul - Lagos

G-BKAU 1st - 3rd November 1983 LGW - Benin City via Casablanca - Banjul - Lagos

G-BKAW 12th / 13th November 1983 LGW - Benin City via Casablanca - Banjul - Lagos

I dont have anything for AV im afraid.

Though from a photo sent in by Paul Lane, atleast one of the 1-11's was in Okada livery at LGW before it headed down route

All the best

Hello John Barcroft,

My most sincere apologies for giving you false information. That aircraft in Air Manchester colours that you flew in was G-AVOF which was leased to BCaL from 16Nov83 to 31Jan84. It had been intended to fly for Air Manchester as G-BMAN but although painted in their colours was never delivered to them. It flew with BIA from 05May83 until 03Nov83 in Air Manchester colours with small BIA titles before going to BCaL.
Many thanks for your information and once again apologies for duff info.

All the very best, Richard.
